A consultant is an expert who gives advise. A grant is for private and public organizations to request support for their cause through writing a proposal. In the proposal the nonprofit describes the why and how they operate. A grant writing consultant is an expert in writing proposals and letters to help secure grants from foundations and governments.

Another service that grant consultants perform that pays huge dividends is researching potential funders. Usually a set number of good fit funders for a set fee. Even though this is in everyone's reach the nonprofit staff is usually to busy writing grants and doing administrative duties they don't have the adequate time or expertise to pick good fit funders that correlate well with the nonprofits vision. This also goes hand in hand with the reviewing and evaluating I talked about before. Grant writing consultants are trained in this area and can dramatically change the total grants you are awarded.

Writing the needs statement (social issue to be solved) is a specialty with grant writing consultants in that they are usually very good at research and know were to go to get qualified statistics.Once they set the tone with the needs statement you can write the narrative part of the proposal that you know better then almost anyone. After all you are engaged everyday with these issues.

Grant writing consultants can be ala carte as we have described. They can also do the whole proposal for you. I should say proposal's because most nonprofits do 12-24 proposals a year. Doing 1-2 per month diversify's the portfolio and spreads the risk around to many funders. Funders like this because one funder almost never will fund your entire funding needs.

Well first, I would suggest that you go to your favorite search engine and look for grant writing consultants. That should get you a lot of information. Including a lot of consultants that belong to professional associations as well as individual sites that will give you in depth information about consultants.

Then after you pick 3-4 that you are interested in call and interview them. Why interview? Well you need to see if you and the consultant react well together on a business level. You need to find one that specializes in what ever kind of grant you are looking for such as a foundation or a government grant. Get references and qualifications and check them out. Ask about their mission statement which is usually posted on their website to see if they really operate in line with what they profess. It's your time to ask them whatever you think is important before you engage them for services. Take advantage of these times but be sure your expectations are in tune with reality.

How do you engage a grant writing consultant?

Well, after you interview and pick one that you think is best ask about a copy of their contract for services along with a fee schedule. Read it! Most people will look at the fee's but not read the content. Make sure it states the service expected along with a solid time line so that both of you are on the same page. Talk about the fee schedule and what is expected. Do you need to pay a certain percentage up front then the balance on completion or do you pay all at completion? Then ask yourself what do I want at the end of this engagement? A report, a list, advise ,etc. Once you have an answer make sure this is in the contract.
