Indoor and Outdoor Potting
You’re certainly not alone if working with potted plants is a favorite way to relax. Potted plants, whether indoors or outdoors, offer us the challenge of nurturing them as they grow. Healthy indoor plants absorb carbon dioxide and return oxygen to the air—some even absorb benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene—making air healthier to breathe. Your hobby requires some special tools, some of which you either already have on hand, or might want to treat yourself to the next time you start a potting project.
Sets of tiny, indoor tools are available. They are about 7 in. long, and are perfect for working in small spaces around indoor plants and bulbs.
- Pruning shears
When you work with outdoor potted plants, you need good hand tools. Don’t try to save money by purchasing boxed sets; purchase tools individually, making sure the metal is strong and the handles are sturdy. Inexpensive tools break or rust, and need to be replaced often—good tools should last you many seasons. Here are some common hand tools.
- Hand Fork
- Pruning shears
- Hand rake
- Cultivator Claw
Fertilizers and Soil Amendments
There is a lot of information available on benefits of both natural (organic) and chemical fertilizers and amendments. Do some research, and decide what’s best for you, your climate and environmental conditions, and your pocketbook. This list of common types should get you started.
- Fish emulsion
- Sphagnum peat moss
- Potting soil
- Mulch and fertilizer
- Chemical or synthetic
- All purpose plant fertilizer
- Specialty fertilizers
You’ll need pots and pot liners for both indoor and outdoor plants. You might also need a variety of other containers on hand.
- Porous and non-porous pots and liners
- Watering can
- Plastic storage container for potting soil
- Tin cans for scooping and holding things
- Envelopes or small plastic bags for storing seeds
- Large plastic barrel to collect rain water

No plant handler should be without these basics.
- Garden gloves
- Plant stakes
- Pens, pencils, and plant labels
- Pocket knife or scissors
- Garden twine
- Table and comfortable seating
- Insect repellent
- Hat or bandana
