The National Veterinary Technician Examination (NVTE) is the state licensing examination. The purpose of this exam is to evaluate the competency level of the candidates to ensure that they have sufficient knowledge and skills to perform the necessary clinical tasks in a veterinary clinic or hospital. This particular exam is regulated by the State Board of Veterinary Examiners. Different states may have different titles for this profession. In general, there are few common titles for this profession, such as Registered Veterinary Technician, Certified Veterinary Technician or Licensed Veterinary Technician.

After obtaining the license, what should a vet tech do then?

In normal circumstances, the newly graduated technicians or technologists would look for jobs in major veterinary hospitals or clinics in order to fulfill their internship requirements. It is a need for them to improve their knowledge and sharpen their practical skills. It is highly recommended that the junior vet techs should look for jobs that can allow them to perform their tasks in all areas of study in order to be all rounded. It is necessary for the new comes to learn and perform physical examinations, surgery and dental procedures in their work place. The hands-on practice really helps them to accumulate much experience.

It is indeed beneficial for the newly graduated vet techs to undergo the on the job training under the direct supervision of licensed veterinarians. It enables them to familiarize themselves to all the laboratory and medical equipments. Besides, they are able to perform all the necessary tasks required like providing the right equipments during surgery, performing various laboratory tests efficiently, etc.

If you consider this profession as a life long career, you should have a long term view. You are advised to consider a specialization for the purpose of career advancement. You can choose to specialize in any of the current fields as follow: animal behavior, dentistry, internal medicine, critical care, anesthesia and so forth. On the other hand, if you aim to work in a research facility, you are advised to sit for Laboratory Animal Science Exam and obtain another unique certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.

In conclusion, passing the Veterinary Technician National Exam is not a full stop to the vet techs. There are many learning opportunities waiting for them. This profession can also be the stepping stone for many animal health techs to be licensed veterinarians.
